I'm position synching two NEMA-17 stepper motors using Mike McCauley's AccelStepper library.

With the Teensy 3.0 I can drive one motor up to 3600 RPM and two synched motors up to 2100 RPM.

The Panucatt SureStepr SD8825 Stepper drives can likely handle faster step rates.
The AccelStepper library works pretty well as is on the Teensy, though it's not optimized for the ARM Timers.

The Surestepper can handle up to 2.2A per phase, and up to 32microsteps/step.

Anyway, I'm having lots of fun with it... Here's a video showing position synch with smooth acceleration with 2 intermeshing blades: http://youtu.be/EQWIIW7q-OI
