OctoWS2811 Library - Using LED's of multiple lengths?

Hi, I was wondering if any one has had experience using the octo library, using it for video to LED, on 8 strings of LED's that are of different lengths? Or rotating them so that the LED's run top to bottom instead of left to right? I've got the example VideoDisplay working properly. I'm in Processing 2.2.1.

Would I have to go through and make it so that the processing file crunches out each line independently? This way it is known which strands of LED's are shorter or longer?

Yes, exactly. You can connect fewer LEDs per output, as documented on the OctoWS2811 web page. But then you'll need to build awareness of those lengths into your processing code, or into the source material it plays.
