No mention of the $45(?) TEENSY - went through 7 pages of duplicate stories in search results - no link to his 'open source' found that he spent 2 years on - one attempted hijack infected page hit.

A 16-year-old Indian American student from Louisville, Kentucky, Mukund Venkatakrishnan, has created a device to test and amplify hearing for only $60.
Mukund said the processor, which is responsible for amplifying volume by increasing the volume of an incoming signal, was the most expensive part – about $45. Other parts, added up to about $15.

Got honorable mention on think.mit.edu:
Development of the First Ever Low-Cost Open-Source Hearing Test and Hearing Aid
Mukund Venkatakrishnan, duPont Manual High School

I'm still puzzled why a blue tooth earpiece maker couldn't set one up to work backwards for $50 - cancel owner voice and provide the ambient sounds to the earpiece. Instead that costs $3-5K for an uncomfortable device.
