    grblHAL on a Teensy 4.1

Sorry for taking so long to reply, didn't see any notification (broken in the SW switch?). No, grblHAL doesn't take tabular input. However, you can load a GCode file onto an SDCard and run it from there. GCode is probably a better solution than setting up a bunch of tables in code. You can...

Going from Teensy to "Real Product"?

I wasn't suggesting people here move to the RP2040 but rather hoping that a similar "drag and drop" programming capability be added to the teensy tool kit. It was a very large reason for me adding an RP2040 product to my mix. My customers are not terribly techno savvy so anything that...

Going from Teensy to "Real Product"?

One of the super nice things about the RP2040 environment is the utter simplicity of programming. Basically, you prevent it from reading the program on startup (via the bootsel line) and it runs the built-in code that acts like a USB storage device. You copy the firmware file onto the drive...

Teensy 4.1 CNC controller progress - 1000 units shipped!

About 3 years ago I started designing a CNC controller board based on the Teensy 4.0. It worked really well but needed a few more pins so I moved up to the T4.1 and added in ethernet. I posted about it here in Oct 2021. Here's the Tindie page. There was a market for the board and 1.5 years...

Ethernet Recommendation (J1B1211CCD Out of Stock)

I use that MagJack in my grblHAL board. Actual circuit below. Works really well. There are quite a few boards in use with the MagJack installed. For what it is worth, I have tested the T4.1 with about 10 different MagJacks and they all work pretty well. Also, if you are looking for volume...

    grblHAL on a Teensy 4.1

The source zip file can't be in the Arduino directory tree. Move it outside the tree and try again. The error message ranks up as close to the all time worst ever. That it has not been fixed is a mystery to me.

    Teensy 4.1 out of stock

I looked at a number of distis (mouser, digi, adafruit) and they were out. Missed SF. How do you see the stock number of SF?

    Teensy 4.1 out of stock

I searched but didn't see this discussed on the forum. The T4.1 is out of stock, is there an expected date when there will be more? I am seeing a lot of orders for my T4.1 based grblHAL breakout board and the customers are asking me where they can get the T4.1. I know there are other suppliers...

    grblHAL on a Teensy 4.1

It is possible if you are willing to modify the grblHAL software. UART1 is available and fairly easy to use. I suggest you ask that question on the github discussion page for grblHAL However, if you just want confirmation that the GCode block (aka line) was consumed by the motion controller...

Eagle library with Teensy 4.0 (test)

Here you go. It has other teensy's in it. I moved on to KiCAD a couple of years ago and haven't looked at them in years so can't vouch for their quality. I do use the T4.1 device in several designs that have shipped (and in one that is still shipping).

    grblHAL on a Teensy 4.1

What does the build output say about the library? That may contain some clues. When you installed it, did you use "install from zip file?" for the networking libraries? If that is the case, then you need to make sure the zip file is not in the Arduino directory structure when you do that.

    Intel NUC and USB?

I am seeing a problem working with a Teensy 4.1 on an Intel NUC running a recent version of Win 10. Basically, I cannot connect to a T41 that was already programmed with an application that talks serial USB. Further when I try to program the T41 from the NUC (using teensy.exe and a .hex file...

    Freezing Problem.

Actually, I changed startup.c based on Frank's posting and that resolved the problem. So, I surmise it is the same problem as in the long thread. I could go looking but maybe someone knows off the top of their head if this change to startup.c is included in 1.54 beta?

    Freezing Problem.

I'm building grblHAL for Teensy 4.1 and seeing a problem that seems very similar to a problem that was discussed here some time ago. I think it may be related to this problem. Basically, when certain options (Ethernet that pulls in LWIP, for example) are enabled, there are significant pauses in...

Project "PCB" review service / advice?

Yes, you will get some decent feedback. Just have a thick skin and ignore the inevitable "you're doing it all wrong" comments. I have always found it worth asking questions there even thought the SNR can reach 1:10.

    Future Teensy features & pinout

Your statement was ambiguous so I sought to disambiguate. Plus, the bare PCB cost doesn't drive the end price very much (as I pointed out) - a lesser argument point IMO. When talking about future teensys, that doesn't automatically mean newer processors. The 1062 is a fantastic processor and...

    Future Teensy features & pinout

If you mean that the "MSRP" of a module with twice as much area would be double, that completely ignores the cost of the various components (chips, connectors, ...) which are likely to dominate the pricing. Other factors like special processing and shipping can add up quite a bit, as well. In...

    Future Teensy features & pinout

One can but hope! I'd be happy with the just the lines to the phy brought out to headers. Don't know if that has timing/routing issues. I assume (incorrectly?) that Host USB goes straight into the 1062. I was also thinking the SD card didn't need to be on the core module though that is a...

    Future Teensy features & pinout

A micromod processor is pretty close to that. SFE sells them - RP2040 for $12, SAMD51 for $15. I'd take short odds on the 1062 one being $15. Frankly, give me a Teensy4.0+ ("double wide" with 80 pins including ethernet, host USB and lcd pins) for $20 and I would be happier than a pig in...

Soldering components with small SMD pads when you are all thumbs?

I agree with Mark, you have to work at it to damage a component when using "normal" solder. It really doesn't take that much practice to learn how to solder and when doing reflow you can use a thermometer and a timer to stay within the datasheet soldering profile. One place where low temp...

    Future Teensy features & pinout

Kind of hard to compete on price/cost with 100 mil pin headers. Personally, I'd love to have a low cost compute module available but without ethernet, meh. And micromod has a hard limit on gpio count.

Soldering components with small SMD pads when you are all thumbs?

I'll jump on the band wagon - some sort of reflow is pretty easy. There are a few tricks that take practice: getting the right amount of paste on and knowing when the reflow is actually complete (if you don't have a real reflow oven). A stencil is crucial for the first but also takes good...

T4.1 ethernet and usb host pin alignments/dimensions

I assume you are referring to one of the two ethernet breakout boards I put on OSHPark though it's not clear which one. The alignment is to follow the teensy pin alignment with the goal of being able to mount it directly on the teensy. Somewhere I mention that probably is unstable. If you...

T4.1 ethernet and usb host pin alignments/dimensions

Yeah, OSHPark runs about 8-10 days with the default options. You do anything different (like black mask), it will take about 2 weeks. I have used PCBWay and JLCPCB. I don't recall significant alignment issues with PCBWay but I am mostly happy with JLCPBC. For bare boards, I often get them in...

T4.1 ethernet and usb host pin alignments/dimensions

On a slightly different topic, I have a new version of the Teensy 4.1 grblHAL board coming that routes the HostUSB pins to a USB A socket. The purpose of that is to allow USB MPG/Pendant/game controllers/... to be used with a CNC machine. Currently in beta test and should be shipping in June.

    RS232_Dolby Cinema Processor

I would first verify that your side is working correctly. Test loop-back where you connect your TX to your RX. Send something and see if you can receive it. I would do this both for the Teensy TX/RX pair and then with the SFT transceiver. You have to do a "crossover" connection - TX on your...

Teensy 4.1 USB Host port with no 5V on VIN?

I think the question is about a Teensy that is not powered from USB and thus has no source of +5V for the Host USB connector. You will need to provide external +5V for that. What is driving the 3.3V regulator on your base board? If it is about an existing setup, you may need to cut and...

Is this a counterfeit Teensy 4.1

While that doesn't look perfect to me, the standards for what constitutes a misaligned component allows for a surprising amount of misalignment. Considerably more than the naked eye would be able to see. For what it's worth, I have purchased a lot of Teensy 4.1s and never seen anything close to...

    Teensy 4.1 Analog Noise

So the actual device is some distance (300-400mm??) from the ADC? I would definitely use shielded wires. If filtering (hw or sw) isn't enough to deal with the noise, I'd use an external ADC as close to the source as possible. By the way, the device you linked to also supports PWM and UART...

    Teensy 4.1 Analog Noise

Your description is a bit confusing to me. First, are you reading a quadrature encoder via an ADC? That's not how I would do it but each to their own. Got Datasheet? When you say "fluctuates by around plus or minus 5", I believe you mean the ADC reading occurs in 10 count range - say 1000 to...

    Future Teensy features & pinout

Which is why I have been using I2C ADCs - you can get a lot cleaner signal into (and out of) one of those. An ADC in a microcontroller is subject to a lot of compromises. I like it when the conversions happens far from the EMI factory. Makes my paltry analog skills look positively brilliant.

    Future Teensy features & pinout

I got a couple of the M.2 connectors and they look to be pretty tricky to hand solder. Lots of solder wick, for sure. I'd go for reflow. Definitely not for your average hobbyist. Costs a lot more than 2 rows of 2.54mm pitch headers, too. Micromod doesn't give me more GPIOs than a T4.1 and no...

Importing Ethernet Kit PCB Traces into Larger PCB

Importing Ethernet Kit PCB Traces into Larger PCB

50mm is ok. Just length match them. Ideally, you would run the T and R pairs next to each other as much as possible. Here is what I did on my most recent T4.1 board. Note, that is for a different MagJack so different pinout - I think the designers take delight in making every one have...

Importing Ethernet Kit PCB Traces into Larger PCB

Hi, Ken, there really isn't much magic to the traces. Since the goal is to have equal lengths, the Kit board traces won't help you very much. For the receive and transmit lines, I would use differential routing to get equal lengths on the P and N lines. Most EDAs have diff routing and it is...

Soil Moisture Sensor based on Heat Capacity

I have looked at sensing soil moisture to control irrigation off and on for 20+ years. I think it is a quixotic quest. Even if you could create a perfect sensor (inexpensive, long lasting, reliable, easy to calibrate) you are up against a number of issues that come down to the extremely...

    Future Teensy features & pinout

I have been spending some time with the RasPi Pico and one thing they did that I really like is a Schottky diode between VUSB and 5V outputs. Teensy 4.0 serial optocoupler 6n137s

I'm using the 6N137 on a Teensy's output. The opto inverts the signal - when the internal LED lights, pin 6 goes to 0. You can fix this by connecting +V to pin 2 and the signal on pin 3 with an appropriate dropping resistor. I use 330R for about 6mA. If you are feeding pin 6 to a teensy, it...
