Battery shutoff strategy for LC

I have a couple LCs that I was going to use for some christmas presents. My plan is to use a 3-battery AAA pack but I want it to completely shutdown after a couple minutes of inactivity.

I am wondering if there is some sort of relay that I would put between the battery and the controller that I could turn off with a digital write? As in a digital write would power it down the same as if a mechanical switch had been opened? And then I could close it (send power back to the chip) with a button on the project?

I also saw a couple MOFSET based tutorials but that seems more complicated then what I want to do and I am not sure they totally isolate the battery when they are not in use?

Or maybe there is a LiPo charger shield that would do this better?

A mechanical relay will probably use more power while it's turned on than what a "soft" power-off solution (like a mosfet) would leak while it's turned off.

Does some one have a schematic I can use? I found a couple online for 5v based boards, I think I need somethin different?
