Hi everyone, first post!

I am hoping to get some guidance on a project I have wanted to attempt for the past 2 years.

I am hoping I can build a replica Deadmau5 LED mau5head that he uses for his live shows.

I have recently built a 200 LED Ambilight with no major issues on a Teensy2.

With my on and off research into this project I have identified some problems that I need guidance on resolving or direction for investigating.

1. The 'panel' isn't X by Y it's almost diamond shaped once it is in the front of the round helmet. Is there a way that this can be address and with work OK with OCTOWS2811 and the Video2Serial interface?
2. I plan on this being a self contained unit. The same as replica. Either the images are being played off a memory device or via a phone, I don't mind which but I'm leaning towards onboard storage rather than a phone.
3. Power. The replica has around 700 LED's in it, that's impressive but I was actually hoping to improve on this using the Adafruit NeoPixel closer to the 1000 LED mark. I know all these at full brightness draw around 55mA so a 550w+ PSU would be needed however. I'm sure I read somewhere that you could clock the power top different strands on different timings so say, you might only power 200LED's at a time but its cycling through the 1000 so fast it doesn't ruin the image to a human eye (how 3D works?)

The example I linked in is around 700LEDs and it is powered by a source inside the helmet so it can be done. I just don't know how.

If anyone has any direction they could point me towards or idea's that would be great!

I know this is an EXCEPTIONALLY ambitious task with my very introductory knowledge into LED's and Programming but if I have kept thinking about it for this long I feel the project will be an exceptionally rewarding one.

Oh finally I'll mention I have found a seller that is selling these for around $2000AUD which to me is good money (if you consider the price of 1000 RGB LEDS alone) which would be a last resort. I really would like to build this myself.
