Yes I have used a similar RTC decades ago.
In their suggested design I see they suggest a 1uF capacitor for timekeeping retention.

It is possible to get RV-3028-C7 samples and a demo board from MicroCrystal. See here.
 
Thanks. I'm hesitating a bit at the price.
I'm going to search for, and or start a new thread specifically on RTC and battery life. I have taken this thread too far from its title.

I asked for and received one of the demo packs! I didn't give it the time it deserved - though I did connect it and try to set up the PPS heartbeat signal and found it to repeat - but not to the same ns - us or even ms as expected?

@BriComp - has the external signal PPS or other freq been found to repeat on a specific steady interval? Was looking to get similar to GPS PPS signal to look at Teensy RTC timing and it was non-regular.

As an alternative to worrying about battery life, why not use a rechargeable cell which you continuously trickle charge whilst power is on?
They can actually be quite cheap. I found one at £0.40...also some at £5+.

I have not used this feature. I can't find any quotes for accuracy, except for the 32.768kHz crystal which is quoted at 1ppm @25C.

The manual does say that the 8192 Hz, 1024 Hz, 64 Hz, 32 Hz, 1 Hz clock outputs are affected for the current period when the seconds register is written to.
This does NOT affect the 32kHz output.
 
My PCBs with RV3028-C7 are arriving tomorrow.
I can't wait to see if all goes well.
This is my first PCB design for 20 years and my first surface mount.
....on tenterhooks!!
