I am looking for a good place to get LED strips. I've read a few horror stories of dead pixels and lots of soldering. Id like to avoid that. Are the adifruit neopixels really worth the 60 bucks a meter? Where do all of you get LED strips from?

New to the forums. Lovin the teenys 3.0 and looking forward to pretty blinking and flashing lights.Thanks.

I don't know for sure, but my gut feeling is the ones on flexible strips are probably all made at the same factory in China.

My main advices is this: buy spares.

This photo pretty much sums up my experience.

I have over 30m, of 60 led/m ws2811 strips... I've only lost one pixel..

I ordered mine directly from GreeLED, the manufacturer: http://www.gree-leds.com/

By the way, GreeLED sent me a new 5m reel to replace the one with the dead pixel, before I realized I could just cut off the first dead pixel.
Needless to say I am thrilled with their customer service.

I see GreeLED has strips based on a new INK1002 or INK1003 chip.

Maybe PJRC needs to get some of these... for software testing of course. ;)

My 144led/m came from chenled and the 60led/m came from greeled. Both good service. The 144led/m were of low build quality on one of the strips, the 60led/m had no issues. I had to pay customs duty on both sets (I live in UK). Dead pixels aren't a horror story unless your installation is inaccessible.

Oh, and my stone age LPD6803 pixel 'buttons' were from Bliptronics in Oz, a very nice chap. (I know that they aren't a strip, but they were great for the project at the time. (no import duty for some reason)

Thanks for all the input. Think ill take your suggestions and go Ray Wu for my 60/meter strip and Neopixel for my 144 9the 144 project has lots of space constraints and the neos seem to be nice and compact and have the best documentation.

6000k cool white for $12:
http://www.amazon.com/HitLights-Flexible-Ribbon-Adapter-included/dp/B005GL5R56/ref=pd_sim_hi_4

These are stocked by Amazon and ship fast. Never had a single bad LED on these strips.

Made custom light fixtures for over my kitchen counters. Very bright. Tried similar strips with 5050 and they were not as bright.
The warm white versions are not so good. Looked a bit yellow/greenish.
Not nice orangey like my Phillips 75w equivalent $$$ led bulb.
