Does anyone know why the above goes for such obscene amounts? I've seen people bid £60 for a board that is way out of date!

Seems like madness, but there must be a reason when you can get a 4.0 for a fraction of the price?

Most probably for replacement. Teensy 3.2 and Teensy 4.0 are not fully pin-compatible, e.g serial ports, CAN bus ports, etc. And don't forget the higher powerconsumption that comes with a Teensy 4.0. Besides that, a Teensy 4.0 puts out higher frequency emissions (which may or may not be a problem for a specific application).

Teensy 3.2 is discontinued. Some people still want them for old designs, where paying 3X or even 10X the original price might be less bad option than having to update or redesign. This is especially true for applications where the original designer has left and someone building it doesn't have the knowledge or the source code to adapt the design to Teensy 4.0. It's supply and demand... a small but strong demand and basically no supply left.

But not everything on Ebay is always as it seems. Sometimes Ebay sellers will use other accounts they create to "buy" their own item. It creates searchable history which shows the item sells at an inflated price. They also collect positive feedback, which can be particularly valuable if the account doesn't have much feedback yet. But it does cost the small transaction fee Ebay charges, so this activity isn't the norm, but Ebay makes their money so it's not the sort of behavior they would have much incentive to prevent.

Teensy 4.0 is available at a fair price because it's still manufactured. Plentiful supply means normal & fair prices.
 
In terms of existing designs, there are at least 2 things that the Teensy 4.0/4.1 just does not have (analog output on pin A14 that can be used to play music and the ability for digital pins to receive 5 volts of input from 5 volt devices).
 
Or, like us, see our plea just posted, you have a complex project, and no path forward now that the the T3.x has been discontinued, and the complex, high-performance, timer-dependent library that you relied on, hasn't moved forward to T4.x's.
