TeensyBat died

I've been using my TeensyBat for a couple of months now without much issue.
One of my friends therefore also started building one and that one doesn't work - I measure too low voltage on the 3.3V regulators, but cannot find why.

After comparing voltage measurements on my own TB, that now also died :(

  • teensybat operates with 3.7V battery that has the typical DW01a - 8205a battery protection built in
  • 3.7~3.8V measured at the power switch, also at the output of the DW01a and the MAX48200
  • screen remains black
  • output of 3.3 regulators has dropped to 2.8
is there a "typical, this happens all the time if you..." ?

what I do know by now:
  • Teensy 4.1 seems to be ok, when I connect (micro)USB while the Teensy is mounted on the motherboard with the display installed, it reacts with
    Teensy Batdetector
    version 1_71
    serial & date
    MEDIA TRANSFER
    MODE
  • so display works, too
  • battery power is ok - measures 3.86V
  • when connected to USB-C without battery connected, the red and green LED both light up
  • both dim slightly when the TeansyBat is switch on, but the detector does not show anything on display
  • when connected to USB-C with battery detected, only the red charging LED lights up (so the battery isn't fully charged)
