What happens with serial commands if teensy 2.0 is not connected via usb?

My project does a lot of logging over the usb serial. It's fantastic how fast it is.

But, if usb is not connected, how can I best bypass the serial.print commands so my loop runs as fast as possible? Or is this a non-issue?
