If you really want serial MIDI, you certainly can use the MIDI 3.2 library and a small amount of hardware to get it.

That looks fine, have all parts, except for the pc900, but I have the 6n138 so that should be just as well..

Yes, that optoisolator should be fine. What passes for a MIDI electrical spec says "Opto-isolator shown is Sharp PC-900. HP 6N138 or other can be used with changes. "
In practice I have not seen anyone make any changes.

Check the sgtl5000 data sheet for the schematic. I'm using that at the moment. Haven't received my first board to test yet though.
