Quick note that I open sourced a ruby gem for creating laser-cut box enclosures, a companion website: http://makeabox.io/ and a corresponding blog post that documents the journey.

Here are a couple of pictures of the 32x32 LED matrix running on Teensy 3.1, inside my enclosure, that was made using the laser-cutter/makeabox.io and then extended in Illustrator.

Feedback is much appreciated! :)

Hi Kig,

Thanks for sharing this! I bookmarked it to check out later (it's late here on the East Coast). What are you using in front of the LEDs for diffusing? It looks like white acrylic but it's hard to tell from the photos.

Yes, I am using milky white 1/8 inch thick acrylic for the diffuse layer, and 3/16 glossy black for the main enclosure.

Speaking of, this project (which I called OmniPix) I am just starting to code visuals. But the enclosure is already available on GitHub, if you wanted it.

I just added the "instructions" layer, so it's clear what the intentions are. Let me know if you find this useful!

Thanks,
Konstantin

Hey that's awesome. I'm thinking of making a Teensy-based clock at some point and a custom enclosure is just what the doctor ordered.

Nicely documented enclosure.

I don't have much experience with white acrylic but for the frosted acrylic I'm using the image looks better if there's a little gap between the LEDs and the acrylic, so each pixel gets a bit larger. 1/4" keeps the look pixelated, and 1/2" is enough to blur neighboring pixels a bit.

I've been using this frosted acrylic .118" thickness with good results:

Thank you so much for the link! I think that it would work much better for diffuser than what I have. Going to order a bunch and test!
