OctoWS2811 with cat5e?

The OctoWS2811 LED adapter's web page specifies using cat6 for the data/ground wire runs to the LEDs it's controlling.

Is using cat5e a waste of my time? I have lots of of cat5e cable already crimped into RJ45 ends and I'm never going to be able to use it otherwise. It'd be nice to repurpose it.

I'm running five 1m ribbons of 60 neopixels each. The longest cable run will be about 8' from the teensy board.
 
I don't see why that wouldn't work. Make sure you check that the wiring is as you expect at the plug ends. I've just wasted half a day because my CAT6 cables were wired back to front....
 
I'm getting good solid results with 2x18' runs of CAT5E.

I'm using 3.5mm mono audio connectors for the data/ground on the led end -- my project needs to be somewhat portable.
