Yet another ILI9341 driver problem!

Okay, so I've been trying to use a generic $5 ILI9341 TFT module with teensy 3.2, but I am having a really hard time getting the libraries to work. I have downloaded probably every single library ever created for this display, but the only one that works is Adafruit's library. A few insights that might be helpful:

1. The adafruit library only works if the reset pin is declared in the constructor
2. All other libraries display a blank white screen
3. The teensy and the display are on a custom circuit board, but I know for sure it works because everything works fine with adafruit's library
4. I get the debug text on the Serial monitor
5. I have triple checked wiring and pin numbers, it is not the problem
6. I am using the provided example programs

So here is the example the DOES work:

Code:
/***************************************************
  This is our GFX example for the Adafruit ILI9341 Breakout and Shield
  ----> http://www.adafruit.com/products/1651

  Check out the links above for our tutorials and wiring diagrams

  interface (RST is optional)

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to read this!

As you guessed it almost, it is a reset problem. Your first code variant (which uses the slower, not Teensy optimized libraries)
a) does instantiate the library with a reset signal, and
b) is probably slow enough to let the display come up before data is transmitted.

The second code variant does not reset the display which causes it to remain blank. Apparently your (too) cheap display variant has no auto-reset circuitry (a RC combination which auto resets the system during the power on cycle).
Thus you must instantiate the ILI9341_t3 library with the third parameter for the RESET pin, too: ILI9341_t3 tft = ILI9341_t3(TFT_CS, TFT_DC, TFT_RST);

Yep, I have tried that, but sadly it doesn't work. I have also tried lengthening the reset pulse duration in the teensy library, but that doesn't work either.

I got a couple of the PJRC stocked displays 2.4 and 2.8 with touch - another 2.4 or two and some 2.8T's from EBay and they've all worked well with the ILI9341_T3 library when connected per the PJRC store listed connects. If you got one form PJRC it might confirm your setup and that it was the display. Paul gets them in bulk and culls out some number that are defective.

EDIT: one of mine went all white and PJRC replaced it - then I made the store noted MOD - closing the Jumper with solder bypassed the active power component and it came back to reliable use. I can't say I ever tried the Adafruit software on that unit when it was all white.

I still have an display identical to the one I'm trying to use, but a corner of it got cracked, so I got another one. I have never had any problems with the cracked one, and it still behaves exactly the same as the new one. And I did close the solder jumper bypassing the voltage regulators on both of them.

I just got the PJRC Audio Tutorial board hardware and plugged in the ILI9341 and wired for that (page 30). I just copied the SPI setup for that with these MODs to the second code in p#1 and it is working fine.

The pinMode()'s and Write()'s were removed from setup() into the 'undefined' #ifdef ZERO.

ODDITY:: It completes the benchmark - and then after a series of 'rotation loops' the screen is going ALL WHITE! One time was 6 total rotation prints - this last time has gone dozens.

<edit>- RE ODDITY: Closed the voltage regulator Jumper - starting some more testing time. Before I did that it only ran a short time (after being off 6 hours) and went WHITE, code was still running oblivious as I put in some loop() Serial.print().
>>> Early results are: shunting the jumper fixed it on my 3.3V Teensy system.

Code:
#ifdef ZERO // THIS code REMOVED
// For the Adafruit shield, these are the default.
#define TFT_DC 5
#define TFT_CS 2
#define TFT_RST 3
#define TFT_EN 0
#define TFT_LED 4

// Use hardware SPI (on Uno, #13, #12, #11) and the above for CS/DC
ILI9341_t3 tft = ILI9341_t3(TFT_CS, TFT_DC);

  pinMode(TFT_LED, OUTPUT);
  pinMode(TFT_EN, OUTPUT);
  digitalWrite(TFT_LED, HIGH);
  digitalWrite(TFT_EN, LOW);
#endif

// This code was ADDED
#define TFT_DC      20
#define TFT_CS      21
#define TFT_RST    255  // 255 = unused, connect to 3.3V
#define TFT_MOSI     7
#define TFT_SCLK    14
#define TFT_MISO    12
ILI9341_t3 tft = ILI9341_t3(TFT_CS, TFT_DC, TFT_RST, TFT_MOSI, TFT_SCLK, TFT_MISO);

void setup() {

  tft.begin();

Indications are this 2.2" TFT ILI9341 needed J1 shunted as well to drop out the V.R.. It is still running well another hour later.

<edit>: I have a Touch 2.8" ILI9341 here and I just put a long 8 pin header to the Audio test breadboard and it works. (skipped the unused MISO and no touch wired) and it is working just fine. J1 open so far - I've used this display for some time no problem before.

CWashburn - if you closed your jumpers then maybe something in the setup makes a difference for the T3 library code? (again, this one is wired to work around the Audio on Board)

Robin/Paul - this non-Touch one came from Digistump - but it acts like the Touch one you replaced that went from ALL WHITE to working after I soldered over J1 per the store MOD link on the display used to get SD card access. I haven't done this to all my displays - just a 2.2" and a 2.8" that went unusable.

Unfortunately, the teensy is soldered directly to the pcb, so I can't test it on a breadboard or anything like that. My wire traces are under 1.5", so length shouldn't be a problem. I guess this would be a good excuse to get the teensy audio board? :p

Probably better than the excuse I used to get the $60 Audio kit - good fun and usable setup. I'm using the 128x128 display right now - twin VU meters on the FFT data. Will port to the larger ILI9341 soon I suppose.

Something about your pin wiring - more adjustable off the soldered board - but if it works with AdaFruit library - it should just be a matter of matching the software selection of pins - unless reset or something is handled differently.

I know with almost 100% certainty that the hardware/pin numbers are not a problem, so it must be with the software. I wonder if there is some sort of read/write test that someone has written that could help me troubleshoot it? In the meantime, maybe I'll just splurge and get an $8 working screen. :D

Yeah - but the AdaFruit works? Suggests the hardware is good - splurging $8 on a fresh display would confirm that though. May as well have them toss one in with the Audio kit to make it worth the cost of shipping :rolleyes:

Has this particular display ever worked with any library? Is it possible you simply got a bad one?

We buy those displays from vendors in China and resell them for $8. Every batch has some bad ones, so we do a 100% test and toss the ones that don't work. Lately, about 10% have been failing... enough that we might have to raise the $8 price which was meant to cover the losses from the rejected displays.

Like I said before, it works exactly like it's supposed to with Adafruit's library. The only incentive I have to switch to the optimized library is speed, of course.
