@ blackketter - I tried your version of the library from a couple of days ago. I renamed it to ili9341_t3xxx as to be able to try it out without overwriting some other versions.

I ran the same test like above and the timings were:

So it looks like the change to use fillRect instead of multiple horizontal lines saved a few percentage in the non Opaque mode and the generate a bitmap saves a reasonable amount of time.
