i have wired up the color touch screen per this pin out and did not use any alternate pins, except for reset and i did not wire any of the touch screen lines.

https://www.pjrc.com/store/display_ili9341_touch.html

At first i only had a white screen and could not get anything to display.
I had found that someone else was able to get things working once they wired up reset to the teensy and i included this in my sketch.
The graphics test hangs up on the "Waiting for Arduino Serial Monitor..." :confused:

any thoughts why the graphics test would hang up?

Did you plug in the USB cable? Notice in the code right after the Waiting for... The code hangs in the while(!Serial) ;

ok...
I deleted the serial stuff and am now running this sketch:

The good news is that now the hello world, numbers, group stuff message rotates around the screen.
So at least my wiring and teensy are in working order.

Could you please point me to some good learning tutorials with this lcd?

                cy = tft.height() / 2 - 1;

  tft.fillScreen(ILI9341_BLACK);
  start = micros();
  for(i=min(tft.width(), tft.height()) - 1; i>20; i-=6) {
    i2 = i / 2;
    tft.fillRoundRect(cx-i2, cy-i2, i, i, i/8, tft.color565(0, i, 0));
  }

  return micros() - start;
}

In terms of the calls to use, the emerged from they adafruit GFX library https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-gfx-graphics-library/overview, see also the examples. And just to confirm what that code did, the problem wasn't the serial so much as the while(!serial) line which is there to halt the code until a terminal window is open and ready. Which is important for a seeing the benchmarks, less useful for first time users such as us.

Indeed - unless you have that display - that tutorial Library info won't jive with what works on your display beyond the general concepts that are common.

When TeensyDuino installs it brings in device specific libraries and samples to the IDE under "File / Examples" ( adafruit_ili9341 or XPT2046_Touchscreen and ILI9341_t3 ) - which you probably found to get the graphics test. Those examples and forum threads are all I've seen.

As far as "while( !Serial )" that waits not just for a USB cable to be plugged in - but for a terminal program to open and start a connection to the resultant USB port on the PC so no serial output is missed. With a change to bypass after a given time it will wait in this case for 4 seconds and then continue before/without Serial ever connecting: "while( !Serial && millis()<4000 )". Then if serial never connects those .print() bits just get lost and the sketch doesn't doesn't stop waiting for it or care afterwards.

Thanks I'll give that a try.
This brings up a concern for me though.
I bought the pjrc color touch screen to learn on and it is nice, but what happens when I decide to upgrade the display? My code wont work because there are key words specific to the ILI9341_t3.h library?
I'm having trouble understanding hardware specific libraries and code.
What is universal and what is unique?

Every chip needs a different driver- so yes, you need different code for different display-chips. There is no "plug and play" on microcontrollers.

A library that supports different kinds of displays is UTFT - but, it is more general and not not optimized for teensy (as far as i know) - so, i guess, it will be slower.

Thanks for the heads up on UTFT.
My project isn't too high speed or too graphics intensive.
I'd much rather have a code that I could use along the way as I progress to a better display.

Thanks for all the help!

On thing to note with changing displays is that many of them have drifted to a sort of standard that is exemplified by the adafruit gfx library https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-gfx-graphics-library/overview but the commands and structure tend to be supported more or less by all libraries. The t3 version of the LCD library was built on this so in many cases you can use just swap out your display declaration and have things work.

That said if you are building a user interface or similar there is a lot to be said with writing helper routines for the graphics that put all your display hardware calls in one place (possibly off in a tab) to make updateing to a new display easier.
