Stalled serial/USB port: how to unstall it without restarting the computer?

Hello,

I have a Teensy 3.2 sending a flow of data to my computer (MBP running MacOS 10.8.5) over the USB port (used as a regular serial port). Sometimes the port stalls. The receiving software (Cycling74's Max) shows the "beach ball of the death" and it's impossible to go on with the software anymore. So after having quit it by force, if I relaunch Max and want to open a patcher containing a "serial" object, the software hangs again. But it's not only a Max issue as even the Arduino IDE stalls as soon as I open the serial monitor.

Currently the only way I have found to solve this issue is to shutdown and restart the computer. Isn't there a simpler way to go to "clean" the port?

Thank you in advance.
