Assigning FFT Frequency Bins to LEDs

Hi all.

I’m planning to control the intensity of a string of DotStar LEDs based on FFT results. Let’s say I have 60 LEDs and 512 frequency bins from the FFT. Is there some rule of thumb for how many bins to assign to each LED? I understand you want to use more bins per LED on the high frequency end. But, what rate of increase across the band? Linear? By octaves? Quadratic? Exponential?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Even though you're using DotStar, maybe some of the code in File > Examples > OctoWS2811 > SpectrumAnalyzer can help?
