Audio Board line out question.

Just to be safe, I should connect the line out pins from the audio board to an amp, or would the headphone out also work?

The audio codec has a built in headphone amplifier that drives the headphones out, that's why headphones (which are speakers) can be directly connected. The line outs are not amplified, and cannot be directly connected to any kind of speaker, not even tiny headphones.

As Paul already stated, you cannot hook up any kind of speaker directly to a line out, it must go through an amplifier first.

You should connect the line-out to your amplifier. Technically you could connect the headphone out to the amp input, it would "work" if the volume is safely low enough, but is a bad idea because the headphone output is 'amplified' and could be high enough to damage the input to the amp.

The headphone output can be used with an amp, but you need to be careful about the "virtual ground". Notice the warning printed on the bottom side of the board. Do not short the headphone virtual ground to real ground. If your amplifier has a grounded input (which connects to Teensy's ground) then you might form a short between these two when you make the connection. It all depends on the type of amplifier. Many of the amp boards have differential inputs, where you can connect the VGND to the negative input and the signals to the positive.

The safest way is to use the line outputs, which have regular ground. If using the headphone, check your amplifier carefully to avoid a VGND to GND short.
