Selecting reference voltage for built-in ADC with Audio Library

Is there a document describing the details of the Audio library?

I gather from Neutronned's mic thread ttps://forum.pjrc.com/threads/41706-Teensy-Microphone-Module that the audio library sets the internal ADC to the T3.2 internal 1.2 V reference, so he needs to put the DC bias at 0.6 V to put the ADC at midscale.

In my particular circuit so far I have not found a noise or dynamic range advantage to using the internal Vref, and I would like to use the external reference at 3.3V instead. Should I simply declare analogReference(EXTERNAL) after starting the audio object, or do I need to modify a library, or is there something else to be done?

As far as I know, the bias for the Audio Library's ADC is 0.6V and not changeable without deep digging in the library.
That's been the challenge that led to Neutronned's mic design (and why I just placed an order for some).
