Connecting a Teensy 3.6 to a USB to Serial adaptor

I've got a MegaSquirt based ECU in my car that has a DB9 serial port.
I can connect it to my laptop using this adaptor https://www.startech.com/uk/Cards-A...ort-USB-Serial-RS232-Adapter-Cable~ICUSB2321F

I want to try and use a Teensy with a small screen to read and display some sensor values but not sure how to connect to the ECU.

Can I use the USB serial adaptor directly with a Teensy or do I need a USB host board?

Over time, I would suspect several of the USB Serial boards like an FTDI based chip will be supported on the T3.6 using the Host adapter. Currently I am not aware of anyone has done this yet.

Another option would be to use a RS232 to TTL converter like: https://www.amazon.com/SenMod-Serial-Converter-Equipment-Upgrades/dp/B01JYNHNW6, you can then hook it up to one of the 6 hardware serial ports on the T3.6.
But make sure to power the converter with 3.3v

I did think about using an rs232 converter but wanted to bring the usb adaptor to the dash so I can swap it to a laptop for tuning.

I wonder if this'll work until the 2nd usb has support.

I just recently bought PL2303 and CH341 breakout boards, to go with my existing collection of FTDI and of course Teensy & Arduino (using CDC-ACM protocol). Don't know when I'll actually get around to supporting them in USBHost_t36... but they're definitely on my TODO list.
