audio shield mic input

So two questions about the mic input on the teensy audio shield. Can I use a non-electret mic (planning on an SM58) with the mic input? And if so, do I have to ground that ground port that's next to it? Or are they unrelated? The mic signal is already grounded at the xlr connection I thought.
