Microsoft is aquiring github!

Just throwing it out there...

I can only guess they will make the site blue, sprinkle smiley faces everywhere, and office/msn links as well :)

Already removed my private repositories from there today and downgraded to a free plan, just to keep access. Hosting my protected stuff now elsewhere and for less $$$.

Soon we can say that GitHub WAS good.

Dunno, could be considered the same stuff as using 365... says the crazy old geezer that uses subversion.

Do not be surprised if 'they' decide to force a mickeysoft login, as has happened in the land of goggliania for everything. In any case, was the only way github was gonna survive.

Long live the Emperor. Join the empire and fight the rebels. Or perhaps Mr. Nadella will embrace the wisdom of Gen Mattis: "In this age, I don’t care how tactically or operationally brilliant you are, if you cannot create harmony—even vicious harmony—on the battlefield based on trust across service lines, across coalition and national lines, and across civilian/military lines, you need to go home..."

The key difference is git stores a complete copy of everything in every clone of the repository. It's not like the days of svn where your checkout was just the code. If we were still on svn and Microsoft bought it, *that* really would be a terrible situation!

@lightcalamar - Cannot speak for Theremingenieur but first gotcha here is if your project/product ends up in a legal face of with microsoft. Have not checked but would be unsurprised if the current github license terms already have 'we can use your data to defend ourselves' clause like most places that store data that has not mattered until now. Even if they do not present your source in court the ability to see the history and comments may give other options to focus attention. Ditto if your startup is looking for a buy out -even if they play fair and 'buy' the code being able to see the project and history gives an edge.

Lots of other legal but shady things they could choose to do as well. Not personally pulling my account but suspect it changes how a business or large open source project looks at things.

Reminds me of 2010, when Stephen Elop was signed on to become CEO of Nokia.

Us Linux-foilhats/conspiracy theorists predicted that based on Elop's reputation of Linux-hate at Microsoft, Nokia's Linux-based cellphones would be killed, replaced with Windows phones, and eventually the entire company would be sold to Microsoft. We were ridiculed. Yet, we were right on every single point.

Anyone who thinks Microsoft acquiring GitHub is a positive move, with zero repercussions to free/open source projects, is ignorant of the past behaviour of that company. It just does not operate that way.

Wow, that says a lot about you ... :)

I am and I have always been a strong idealist and thus a strong anti-capitalist, too. I'm fully ok with funding idealist startups and small companies but I'm not ok with giving my money to Bill Gates who is part of the group of the 10 US Americans who own more money than the poorest 10% of the population together. As I said, for me, it's about idealism and ethics, not everything is rational.

Edit: I'll stop here, political discussions are not desired in these forums.

When you pay $7500 million for a company with $140 to $200 million annual revenue, your plan obviously has words like "monetize" rather than being content to just keep it running business-as-usual.

Whether those changes will be "good" or "bad" is very hard to know.

These days, I'm less worried about "evil" behavior than the downward spiral of so many Microsoft projects.

Today's conversation with the NRTL client test data program auditor.

NRTL guy - do you have any code on github?
me - nope, all on a local svn box
NRTL guy - show me
me - looky here [tappity tappity]
NRTL guy - ok, do not really understand, but looks like good control

Geez, kids and and their distributed systems. You can have my Subversion and SCons when you pry my cold dead fingers from the keyboard (also said this to my nephew to get him wound up).

I've only ever used github to share code with others, and to contribute to public code others have shared.

It's amazingly effective for sharing, much moreso than the old days of svn & cvs.

Hopefully enough folks will stick with github that failure isn't a self fulfilling event . . .

… money to Bill Gates ...

Nice you added the Edit … so this is just info - not provocation ...

So hard on Bill … He perhaps has more in common 'idealistically' with you that you might think … gatesnotes.com/2018-Annual-Letter

Just don't try to read that in Microsoft EDGE - it won't display - I had to open in I.E. to see details … LOL

<edit> : edge fail probably adblocker & ghostery - some 37 elements refused.

Interesting letter. Wouldn't think it about the Gate's. PS. It opened up fine for me in EDGE. LOL

Yes, is true.

This is all of us, but more than anti-capitalist like you, I am anti-imperialist and anti-Yankee at least those who invade countries with the right to arms. It is not a policy forum, however I have to thank the country of "the police" worldwide in my country in 1936 came to fight for our legality the international brigades, such as the GREAT call;

The Brigade Abraham Lincoln

or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Brigades
