Defragster provided the clue as to how to solve my previous post on this problem. Thanks very much.
Solution is to rename the wire library if not using it in other sketches for use with Arduino to an arbitrary name
and use the slowsoft i2c library on Github.
I am using i/o 18 and 19 for SDA and SCK on the Teensy 3.5
