HID confusion Teensy 2.0

I am a bit confused. It appears that 1.6.7 Teensyduino supported the generic HID library that can easily be used to create custom HID reports(AppendDescriptor, etc). However, now the HID support is limited to the tools menu (Keyboard, mouse, raw etc). The tools implementations seem all monolithically coded and do not utilize the USBCore. Is that correct?
 
In case it helps anyone else, I just moved to LUFA and Atmel Studio. Install the LUFA extension and create a new example project (File->New->Example Project...) pick from the FourWall list an appropriate starting project.. 'Generic HID Device Demo', or the like.
