Please forgive my noob ignorance; if I read correctly the 3.6 can use the USB directly with the library, no need for an additional shield. My questions are these:

1. Is my assumption correct that a shield is not needed for 3.6?
2. Is this the same for 3.5? Losing the 5v tolerance would be less than ideal.

I believe so, though I have not done it personally. I believe the inner pins for USB host are in the same order as a USB adapter within computers.

The Teensy 4.0 also has USB host mode, though there you will need to solder the D-/D+ pins used for the USB host from underneath the board (i.e. they aren't brought out as pins). The breakout board for the T4 that Paul designed (but does not ship) brings these out to a USB connector. And the forthcoming Talldog/loglow adapter will also bring out these pins:

No, the 3.5 does not support USB host mode directly on the board, and the pins used for USB host on the 3.6 are two extra analog pins (A25 and A26) and two ground pins.
