    Which display

Which display would you recommend for a 4.0 canbus dashboard

    Preference
    IPS
    >500nit
    4-5inch
    800x480 (or any high dpi)
$100 (preferably as cheap as possible)

Was planning on using a Nextion and just replacing the lcd with a better one. But was adviced against it.

The display would be simple numbers framed by rounded rectangles. If onboard flash, some graphics.

What about a RasPi Zero running an HDMI display with a CANbus adapter hat? Lots of choices then...

Would you happen to know of a kernel that's instant boot and shutdown?

That's the main reason I went with a teensy.

Not a RasPi guy. However, I did research this a while back and figured I could get a minimal system to boot <10S. I think the system is called "buildroot". It basically compresses a stripped full OS image into the initial RasPi bootload file. Which autoloads from SDCard or whatever the boot media is. I could be wrong about all of this but that's my memory (not what it once was).
