I'm new to Teensy, and I'm waiting for my new Rev D Audio Adapter, due in a few days, but meanwhile, I thought I'd try
a PT8211 board that I've used with Teensy 3.2 and 3.6.

Can it work?

I tried on a breadboard (just as I've done with 3.2 and 3.6), and accounted for the relocation of RX2, but haven't gotten any sound.

I'm not sure what you meant by the relocation of RX2, but given the PT8211 board uses I2S, there are several pins that need to be relocated with jumper wires. I posted a list some time ago, but I can't find the posting. The simplest thing to do is go to the audio adapter page to find the various pins that need to be connected. The PT8211 would use the same pinout as the Audio Shield revision C, while the Teensy 4.0 uses the pinout for Audio Shield revision D.
