I have just found this company (4D Systems out of OZ): https://4dsystems.com.au/
They appear to have a really nice line of intelligent LCD displays. I just ordered one from Mouser... not cheap - but won't break the bank!

This company also provides an AMAZING editing package (Workshop4) that provides drag-n-drop widgets, and the code to run them is also created!
The displays can be standalone or talk to Arduino, rPI, or whatever. The damn editor is a LOT of fun too!
