How to use Teensy as USB HID proximity sensor

Hi all,
I am a newbee here and seems some suggestion. I am trying to build a USB HID Proximity sensor device that can natively work under Windows 10 OS without special device drivers. I have not seen any sample though I am hoping Windows OS has native support as long as I can properly present a USB ProximityHID Sensor to OS. My first step is to use Teensy and build a fake/virtual USB Proximity HID device with hardcoded values

While doing some Google research, I stumbled across Teensy and now have Teensy++ 2.0, 3.2 and 3.6 to try. This is very new device to me so I spend some time this weekend familiarizing it. Thanks to all the info available in internet, I can easily get Teensy working under Windows as well as Linux using both LUFA and Teensyduino. I tried various sample source of both LUFA and Arduino and the USB HID device successfully shows up under Windows as native USB device (keyboard/mouse/joystick etc) . So I think I am ready to dive in but still missing some key basics and hope you can help

a) Is there already existing project that I can reference for sample of sensor HID device. Neither LUFA nor Teensydino have HID for sensor type. Any best approach that you can suggest
b) Should I use LUFA or Arduino source for such a project to build USB sensor HID device. I am assuming LUFA may be easier path but it does not support Teensy 3.2, 3.6. As for Arduino, I see a post under "Adding a new USB type" in this forum that I will try it though I am not sure all the underline details of how to manipulate Arduino base files. I need to add to support a new HID sensor device
c) How do one debug the firmware with LUFA vs Arduino. I am sure to make mistake and not sure what are the best strategies to debug. It seems Arduino shows a special endpoint for HID serial message but I am unclear the details. Also I am not sure how one debug under LUFA

Any pointers or help will be greatly appreciated. I am really excited with this new Toy and also thankful for access to this community

This is the HID report descriptor that tells Windows what data the joystick interface will send in its 12 bytes. The simplest thing to try first would be the change this to tell Windows it sends proximity data. It will probably look something like this:

You won't need all 12 bytes. You can fill the rest of the 12 bytes to "Constant". Here's 3 lines from the keyboard report descriptor that show how to do this for 5 bits.

If your proximity data is 10 bits, for example, then you would use those 3 Const lines with 0x05 change to 0x56 to fill up the other 86 bits.

The other trick you'll need it defining BCD_DEVICE near the top of that file, because Windows has a really annoying habit of ignoring all the USB descriptors if it has already seen them and stored a copy in the Windows Registry. For each attempt, you'll need to define a new value your Windows machine hasn't seen before.

The good news is Arduino will (or should) detect you've changed that file and automatically use the new info (you can check by just adding any syntax error) for each upload. The less-than-ideal news is once you change BCD_DEVICE or other descriptor info, there's a good chance the software won't be able to auto-reboot your Teensy. Be mentally prepared to have to press the pushbutton on your Teensy to get it to upload new code, if it's running anything you've programmed with modified descriptors.

Hi Paul,
I made some minor progress and sensor does show up under Window device manger; though more work is needed. I believe I now need to provide hooks to respond to host side command from OS on get/set feature and also report HID_input data. My Arduous sketch for Joystick.ino is empty with Serial.Print message adn that I can see print messages.

Any suggestion to where do I need to make changes to respond to host code Feature/Input request. Is this in the ino sketch or some low level USB file somewhere in Arduino source. I am a firmware developer but Arduino is new to me and code layout/flow/build is not much familiar

Can someone please help suggest how to debug Teensy USB code under Arduino . I attempt to uncomment serial_print function (usb_dev.c) but Arduino serial monitor doesnt show anything. I like to add some print statement in low level code to study the Windows/teensy_fw interaction and not much luck

If any of you who have worked on USB HID aspects or debugging such support, any share some pointers it will be greatly appreciated. This HID stuff Teensy board/SW is all new to me and I am throwing dart in dark. I hdont know if I need to describe report_page differently or add code in usb_dev.c to support commands coming from OS.

Update on my previous message.
a) I removed all the feature reporting. the report descriptor now is stripped to below
b) I noticed I missed on Paul suggestion to fit the report block need to be 12 byte long(JOYSTICK_SIZE). I fixed the report size to build the report packet as 12 byte (below).
This take care of parsing error but now i see different error on Windows
