He uses the VID and PID of USB devices to identify hardware. For the Teensy 3.6, this works as "ID 16c0:0483 Van Ooijen Technische Informatica Teensyduino Serial" where VID=16c0 and PID=0483. Questions 1-Is it reasonable to assume this would not change in the future, and 2-is there a list of VID/PID for the Teensy 3.x, 4.x family?
