Ethercat on Teensy 4.1?

I have an i.MX RT connected to a Microchip LAN9252 as an experimental EtherCAT slave. This has built-in Phys and handles all of the realtime EtherCAT comms. However, the LAN9252 is an absolute pig to talk to with its indirect addressing mode. Fortunately, Microchip have just released LAN9253 and LAN9254 which seems to allow direct addressing. I await my samples...

I know running a slave has hardware issues, but what about making the Teensy an EtherCAT master? SOEM is open source and could maybe be ported. I might then need another EtherNET connector to be able to talk to the Teensy, but anyone looked into this? I've had some success with the SOEM master under Intime on Windows, but not 100% working.
