Frequent Mac hard reboot when uploading to teensy

I'm running Teensyduino 1.53 (Arduino 1.8.13) on macOS Catalina 10.15.7, using a Teensy 4.0.

Often (about 1 time in 3) my Mac does a hard reboot during the upload process. Black screen with multilingual text, progress bar while it reboots, the whole thing.

No idea if this depends on my sketch or not, but it is attached.

What can I do to fix or help debug this ?

If it were me, I would run some type of check on Mac to make sure there is not something corrupted or going bad.

Then would probably delete arduino install, and install fresh copy and see if that helps
 
Nearly all other Arduino boards use 12 Mbit/sec USB speed, and most of those have a combination of slow processors and inefficient software that can't manage to use even half that speed. Teensy 4.0 has 480 Mbit/sec USB and a fast processor and pretty efficient software.

This problem may or may not necessarily be speed related. But the point is Teensy 4.0 isn't really comparable to most other Arduino boards.

Update: Still not fixed. Here's what I've done:

Ran Apple hardware diagnostics, showed no error.

Removed & reinstalled Arduino & Teensyduino.

Uninstalled assorted apps with kernel extensions.

Switched USB type to 'Serial + MIDI'

Still crashes about 1 time in 3. Crash report is below, in case it tells anyone anything.

Sorry, I am not much of a MAC person. I do have an older Mac Air, that I use as secondary or third development/test machine.

But might help to know things like what version of MAC OS are your running? Answer from your first post: macOS Catalina 10.15.7

Which Teensy version did you install 1.53? I am assuming you installed a version that downloads the complete Arduino as well as Teensyduino all as one properly signed package?

I'm afraid only Apple can solve this. It's a kernel level problem, which is way out of my league! Teensyduino doesn't install any drivers on MacOS. Nothing runs in kernel space, or even with root access. Everything is user level code making use of Apple's public APIs and MacOS built-in drivers.

Best I can suggest is trying different USB Type and CPU Speed settings. Maybe some combination will avoid triggering this problem. Or if you have Parallels, maybe try using Windows from a VM.

But just to be clear, a crash from kernel space is absolutely a bug in either MacOS or some other kernel-level drivers you may have installed. Teensyduino never installs any kernel-level code.
 
Ah, I see, thanks. So removing any third-party kernel drivers that have anything to do with USB might be helpful ?

I just tried your program on my Mac. Same laptop as yours, same OS 10.15.7, same TeensyDuino 1.8.13. Uploaded program 15 times into brand New Teensy 4.0, one after another, NO PROBLEM!

You must have some strange KEXT problem as it works fine on my MacBookPro11,5. I have a lot of non apple KEXTs installed on my MacBook, but no problems with TeensyDuino.

I have seen this too.
Generally it seems more stable when I do not use a hub with various other usb peripherals.
 
Interesting. It just shows how easily I can ignore a problem if I am busy with another problem. I will watch this thread.
 
I have something of an update on this, not sure if it is at all informative, but just in case.

I've moved to a new M1 Macbook Pro running 11.3.1, and didn't see this problem at first, until I changed 'USB type' to 'MIDI'.

I have something of an update on this, not sure if it is at all informative, but just in case.

I've moved to a new M1 Macbook Pro running 11.3.1, and didn't see this problem at first, until I changed 'USB type' to 'MIDI'.

Not sure if there's anything else I can do, but I suspect my original problem was in some way MIDI-related.

I'm surely not the only person building Teensy MIDI apps on MacOS ?
 
Quick followup to mention recent work to avoid a MacOS crash triggered by teensy_serialmon. It definitely is a MacOS bug involving CFFileDescriptor. This new teensy_serialmon is a complete redesign to avoid all use of CFFileDescriptor.
