Teensy 4.1 as HID pass-through for one-handed keyboard?

I want to be able to type efficiently with one hand. I have a left-handed gaming keyboard with extra buttons accessible to the pinky and thumb that can easily be used as SHIFT\ALT\CTRL modifier keys. I want to use my thumb and pinky for modifiers (to select character sets) and my center three fingers for character selection.

Windows OS has tools for custom keyboard layouts, but they don't work for this because they don't support modifier keys or extra buttons on gaming keyboards. I considered getting a PCB made that custom-fits my hand and using a Teensy in HID mode, but if I can use a Teensy both in USB HID and USB host, I can use the Teensy 4.1 as an intermediary between the PC and a retail gaming keyboard without getting a PCB made.

It seems like someone might have done this before and there are already projects out there. Any help?
