Teensy Board Not Found For Ubuntu VirtualBox

I'm working on a project where I'm trying to using a teensy 3.2 with teensyduino on ubuntu through a Virtual Machine. I'm getting an error "No Teensy boards were found on any USB ports of your computer" but when I run on my default OS (Windows 10) everything works fine and the device is found. I think this has something to do with the way serial ports are accessed through virtual box. Right now VirtualBox is set up to use serial port COM6 from the host machine. This makes it so that ubuntu recognizes the teensy 3.2 as a standard COM port and not a teensy board. Is there a work around for this?

You can configure which USB device is captured by virtual machine instead of the host (in devices->usb).
