Metal detectors & ground penetrating radar

Hi everyone! Since i was a kid i was always intrested in what lies undergrond and i always tried to figure out how to find amazing tresures buried deep benith the ground. Now that i grew up and I am almost an electronic engeneer (bechelor degree) i was albe to make more and more research about instuments such metal detectors and ground penetrating radar. Even thoug there is plenty of material on the internet, this seems to only cover the very basic working principle of these two machines. In my university there is only one course about electro magnetism, and it really didn't add anithing special to my knowledge about MD and GPR. The few schematic on the internet are all analog and, allow me to say, quite complex. Anyhow, i am not looking for someone to tell me "Here's the schematic, have fun", I would really love someone who can point me to the right direction to learn how to understand and acquire enough knowledge about this field of electronics witch will allow me, over time, to try to build my own machines. Needless to say, i would love to use a T4.1 to make it digitally controlled.

The second link might be really useful, thanks! But i was hoping to exploit the Power of modern day microcontrollers for processing in some way the received signal from the coil, for both the md and gpr. Thanks tho, the link has a very nice explenation
 
Indeed YMMV ... it was just a related ref point that seemed to have a good deal of links and multiple approaches as recalled.

I haven't done it yet, but I really like the looks of the Pulse Injection metal detector circuit on https://www.lammertbies.nl/electronics/pi-metal-detector combined with the curve-fitting method on https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/386038-time-constant-of-exponential-decay using the https://www.arduino.cc/reference/en/libraries/curvefitting/ library. With the speeds and capabilities of a Teensy, you should be able to continuously calculate the time constant and intercept for good material identification.
