External Power via USB-Port possible?

Hello there!
I'm working on an audio project, using a Teensy 4.0 and the corresponding audio-shield. Supplying power via my PC results in an unacceptable noise level on the input of the audio shield. The noise is ok (not great, but usable) while using a cellphone charger or a USB-battery. The problem is
- I need the serial monitor
- all pins, including the +5V pin and the serial pins, are occupied by the audio shield sitting on top of the teensy

According to
https://www.pjrc.com/teensy/external_power.html
I can supply external power while still using the USB features, but I cannot access the +5V pin easily, due to the audio-shield. So my question is:

Can I cut the red wire of my USB-Cable going to the PC, and connect it to the red USB-wire coming from the cell-charger / battery, plus connecting all ground wires? I think it should be the same, if the +5V teensy pin and the +5V-USB connector are physically connected. Same goes for the grounds.

Any insights (or better solutions for the problem) welcome :)
