I blew my LC - any idea why?

I had a Teensy LC hooked up to 120 ws2812 pixels (strip) using the 5v signal from pin 17 and hooked up to a 10A power supply. There is also a rotary encoder knob, that, apart from occasionally setting the speed and brightness, is not touched. It is in a plastic container indoors and is not kicked or moved. It runs a few hours a day. It was running fine (about 2-3 weeks) until I suddenly noticed the the pixels aren't updating anymore. I cycled the power and still nothing, dead as a doornail. Not even my initial onboard led flashing when powering on. I swapped out the power supply, still dead. I swapped the LC for a old Teensy 3.1, I still have lying around and then it worked.

So my question is this. Did I just get a dud board? If so how often is that likely to happen? Or, should I have added additional cicuitry/components that could have prevented this?
