USB affecting audio noise

Hi
I am having another go at doing an audio project with a teensy 4.0 for guitar effects. I have a breadboard setup with teensy 4.0, WM8731 master mode and some buffer opamps. It works ok and it is fairly non-noisy at normal gain settings. However cranking up the gain for a clipped and distorted guitar sound causes the random noise hiss to become unacceptable. I am now in the process of trying things to reduce the noise. e.g. different supplies, decoupling etc. One thing which seems to have a big positive effect (reduces noise) is plugging in the macbook USB to teensy (I have cut the USB power connection on the PCB). This made me wonder if I could disable USB completely during operation to see if that reduces noise. Does anyone know how to do this?
