Teensy to Teensy Serial Errors without Ground

Teensy to Teensy connected with Serial 1 pins without ground connected worked perfectly. After moving (PC Teensy connects to) to a different outlet and power strips, the serial connection has errors without ground. They have no error with the ground connected.

Can outlets or different UPS power sources cause issues?
 
For the UART Serial signaling to work a common GND with Teensy is needed.

As originally connected between computer and power to Teensy that must have been present through USB cable and outlet.
